B216209 BCM Code on 2025–2026 Harley-Davidson Softails

B216209 BCM Code on 2025–2026 Harley-Davidson Softails

By MOONSMC® Support · Last updated October 5, 2026

Seeing BCM code B216209 or a warning on your 2025 or 2026 Harley-Davidson Softail after a lighting change? Some riders report that their running lights, brake light, and turn signals operate normally while the warning keeps returning. We are investigating that behavior with the MOONSMC V4 tail light, 2025+ rear harness, and M8 bezel assembly.

The first step is to establish whether the code is current or historic. Harley has documented a specific historic-code condition, while recurring warnings after aftermarket lighting changes require further diagnosis. Record the complete code, confirm its status, and verify whether it returns after clearing.

📋 What Harley-Davidson says about B216209

Harley-Davidson issued Service Bulletin M1675, “Historic Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B216209,” on March 24, 2025. It lists the 2025 Heritage Classic (FLHC), Low Rider S (FXLRS), and Low Rider ST (FXLRST), across all markets.

The bulletin describes a historic B216209 that can be recorded when a rider holds the hand brake or foot brake while switching the ignition on. In that particular situation, Harley says the motorcycle can function normally without an actual fault or illuminated warning, and hardware replacement or further troubleshooting is unnecessary.

For a current B216209, Harley directs technicians to the Electrical Diagnostic Manual. The historic-code condition above does not, by itself, explain a persistent warning after a lighting change. Use the appropriate year-and-model diagnostic procedure for the full fault definition and tests. [1]

Why is the bulletin on NHTSA.gov?

NHTSA receives manufacturer communications and publishes publicly accessible copies. The PDF is a Harley bulletin archived by the government, and its presence there does not make it a recall. Harley’s own recall-information page also directs owners to the government database for technical service bulletins. [2] [3]

🔎 Current vs. historic: why the distinction matters

Code status How to interpret it
Current The controller has detected the condition during the current operating cycle. Erasing its record does not establish that the triggering condition has been resolved.
Historic A recorded event that is no longer identified as current. It can still be relevant to an intermittent or recurring problem.

Harley’s 2018 Softail Electrical Diagnostic Manual distinguishes these statuses with C and H and explicitly describes clearing historic codes through the odometer diagnostics. That older manual does not establish the 2026 procedure, but “historic” alone does not mean that computer software is always required to clear a code. Confirm the supported procedure and status on the motorcycle being tested. [4]

Record the complete code and its status before clearing anything. A partial dashboard photo or a report of “a BCM code” is not enough to identify the exact fault.

Is B216209 exclusive to 2026?

No. Harley’s Service Bulletin M1675 already documents B216209 on the 2025 Heritage Classic (FLHC), Low Rider S (FXLRS), and Low Rider ST (FXLRST). The code is therefore not exclusive to 2026 motorcycles. [1]

💡 B216209 is not exclusive to MOONSMC tail lights

B216209 is a Harley-Davidson BCM diagnostic code and is not specific to the MOONSMC V4 tail light. Harley’s own bulletin describes a condition in which this code can be recorded without an actual component fault. [1]

Owners have also reported B216209 after installing other aftermarket LED rear-light setups. These are individual owner reports, not controlled compatibility tests. They support checking the complete installation before attributing the code to a particular tail light or brand.

We have not established that every LED tail light triggers B216209. Whether it appears must be checked on the specific motorcycle and installed configuration. Normal visible lighting operation alone does not establish that a recurring BCM warning has been resolved.

⚡ Why a load equalizer may not eliminate this code

A conventional resistor load equalizer adds an electrical load in parallel with the lighting circuit. This reduces effective resistance and increases current draw, which can address certain low-load warnings or hyperflash.

Correcting hyperflash does not establish that B216209 has been resolved. A load equalizer can address the lighting behavior it was designed for, while a current or recurring BCM code still requires its own diagnostic checks.

Our 2025+ Softail M8 LED Lighting Load Equalizer is intended to address LED lighting load behavior. We have not established it as a universal B216209 fix. Compatibility should be evaluated with the complete installed lighting assembly.

💻 Could diagnostic software clear B216209 permanently?

A diagnostic-tool clearing test is worth performing, particularly when the status of a stored code is uncertain. A shop can record the code and status, erase the stored record using a supported tool, and check whether the condition is detected again.

Clearing a code, updating BCM software, and changing a configuration are separate operations. If a shop obtains a lasting result, the procedure needs to identify which operation was performed. Ask the technician to record the tool and version, motorcycle model, BCM software level, any settings changed, and the subsequent test results.

After clearing, repeat the relevant ignition and brake operations, complete an appropriate road test, and scan again. A clear display immediately after deletion is only the first check. A lasting result needs to be verified on the tested motorcycle and parts combination.

🔧 What should owners check before replacing parts?

  1. Capture all codes and statuses. Photograph the dash and obtain a complete diagnostic readout when possible. Note whether the warning returns at ignition-on, during braking, after brake release, or while riding.
  2. Check the lighting functions and connections. Inspect seating, terminals, grounds, and pinched wiring. Verify running light, brake light with both controls, and left and right signals. If the brake light fails to operate, correct that before riding.
  3. Use the correct year-specific assembly. The 2025+ rear harness differs from the earlier M8 harness. Evaluate the harness, bezel PCB, lamp, and equalizer together.
  4. Establish an OEM baseline when needed. A technician can compare the complete OEM rear-lighting assembly with the aftermarket assembly to help isolate when the code appears. Record the installed configuration and diagnostic results for each comparison.
  5. Validate the result after clearing. Repeat the relevant operating conditions, road-test the bike, and rescan. Use the appropriate diagnostic manual for a code that is current or recurring.

❓ B216209 FAQs

Will riding or running the hazards make it disappear?

Neither should be treated as an established B216209 repair. A road test helps validate a repair, but it does not replace diagnosis of a recurring condition. Confirm whether the code returns with a follow-up diagnostic readout.

Will rebooting the BCM or ECM fix it?

A restart, a diagnostic-code clear, and a firmware update are different actions. Power cycling alone does not establish that the condition triggering B216209 has been resolved. Start with the module reporting the code and verify the result under the conditions that caused it to return.

Does B216209 mean the headlight needs replacing?

The documented bulletin condition involves brake application at ignition-on, and the owner reports discussed here involve rear-lighting changes. Those findings do not establish a headlight fault or justify replacing a headlight solely because B216209 appears. The exact current-code diagnosis should follow the motorcycle’s Electrical Diagnostic Manual.

🏍️ MOONSMC support and ongoing updates

We are investigating reports of recurring B216209 with the V4 tail light, 2025+ rear harness, M8 bezel, and inline equalizer assembly. The complete installed configuration, code status, and conditions under which the warning returns are essential to comparing results.

We will update this guide when verified diagnostic or compatibility results are available. Any successful procedure will identify the tested motorcycle, installed components, operation performed, and follow-up checks. A result on one configuration should not be presented as a guaranteed repair for every 2025 or 2026 Softail.

If you encounter this code with our rear-lighting setup, contact MOONSMC with your year and model, installed parts, complete code readout, and when the warning returns. These details help us compare configurations and track verified results.
